BASEBALL — July 20

SAN FRANCISCO (Cain) vs BOSTON (Pomeranz)
(America’s Bookie Line: Red Sox -260 / Giants +220, Total 10) — Boston offers Drew Pomeranz his first start for the team here. He has not only compiled a 2.47 ERA, he has allowed just 5.9 hits per nine innings and held National League batters to a lower average than anyone else. In his last three starts, he has yielded just one run on TEN hits in 21 innings. And last time he faced these Giants, he blanked them on two hits over seven frames. Matt Cain got sidelined by a hamstring in mid-June, but not long before that had a nice run of three starts (four runs, 19 hits in 21 innings). So it is not inconceivable that in his first start off the DL, he could give them five respectable innings. San Fran has lost four in a row, so they need to get a move on; we don’t know that it starts against this southpaw. But take note of the totals trends – Red Sox six straight unders; Giants five unders in last six.
